Plumbing Cost in Greenville, TX: Why Two Quotes for the Same Job Can Differ
Plumbing prices vary more than most homeowners expect, and the same job can come back at two very different totals. This page gives wide ranges for nine common jobs, shows what moves each one and names the sources behind the numbers.
How to read a range before you compare quotes
The figures below are not quotes. They come from published cost guides, most of them national or Dallas-area, plus a regional estimate. Each range was then widened so a real Greenville quote is likely to fall inside. No guide surveyed Greenville itself, so a local price can sit outside any range here.
Treat a range as a way to spot a number that looks far too low or too high. Only a written quote after the plumber has seen the problem tells you what your job will cost. Ranges were last reviewed in October 2026.
Nine common jobs and their wide price ranges
The table lists each job with its range, the main drivers of the price and the page that explains the decision.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tank water heater replacement | $650 to $2,800 | Tank size, gas or electric, venting, expansion tank and pan | tank heater replacement |
| Tankless water heater installation | $1,500 to $4,800 | Gas line size, electrical capacity, venting route | tankless installation |
| Drain cleaning with a snake | $150 to $450 | Which drain, branch or main, cleanout access | snaking a clogged drain |
| Hydro jetting a main line | $350 to $950 | Footage, roots or grease, cleanout access | jetting a main line |
| Leak detection on a slab | $150 to $400 | Time to pinpoint, depth, size of the house | locating a hidden leak |
| Slab leak spot repair | $600 to $4,500 | Concrete breakout or an overhead reroute | slab leak repair routes |
| Trenchless sewer lining | $3,500 to $9,000 | Footage, pipe diameter, condition of the old pipe | sewer pipe lining |
| Whole-house repiping | $4,500 to $12,000 | Square footage, bathrooms, one or two stories | replacing every supply line |
| Garbage disposal replacement | $200 to $550 | Horsepower, outlet, sink flange, piping changes | disposal replacement |
Where a job has a low and a high end, the low end usually means an easy reach and a like-for-like swap. The high end means harder access, bigger equipment or extra work the house needs.
Water heaters: what separates a low quote from a high one
Water heaters are the job most homeowners price first. The total depends on what changes around the heater as much as the heater itself.
Tank water heater replacement
A tank swap sits at the low end when the new unit matches the old one in size, fuel and venting. The old tank should also drain and haul away easily. It climbs with a larger tank, a switch between gas and electric, new venting, a pan and drain, or an expansion tank. Ask the quote to name each part, since two tanks at one price may not come with the same extras.
Tankless water heater installation
Tankless units cost more up front because the house often needs something new. That may be a larger gas line, extra electrical capacity or a venting route through an outside wall. Descaling belongs in the conversation too, since scale builds up in the heat exchanger. This site does not publish a hardness number, so ask for a water test before you decide.
Drains and sewer lines: how far into the pipe the plumber has to go
Clogs and sewer work run from a simple visit to a major repair. The price follows how far the plumber has to go into the line.
Drain cleaning with a snake
A clog in one sink or tub sits at the low end. The price rises when the clog is in a branch line or the main. It also rises when no cleanout gives access or the visit needs more than a basic cable. Ask whether the price covers one drain or the whole line, and whether a camera look is included or billed separately.
Hydro jetting a main line
Jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the pipe wall, so it suits grease, scale and roots that a cable only punches through. Footage, root growth and cleanout access set the price. A camera inspection before or after is often its own line, so ask whether it is in the number.
Trenchless sewer lining
Lining prices follow footage, pipe diameter and the condition of the old pipe. A pipe that is collapsed or badly offset may not accept a liner, and that turns the job into excavation. Ask for the camera footage with the quote, and for the length to be lined written on it.
Leaks and old pipes: detection, spot repair and a full repipe
Hidden leaks and old pipes are billed in stages: find the problem, then decide how to fix it.
Leak detection on a slab
Finding a leak is usually billed apart from fixing it. Acoustic or thermal detection takes time that depends on how faint the leak is, how deep the pipe runs and how big the house is. A detection report showing where the leak is, and is not, is worth having even if you hire someone else for the repair.
Slab leak spot repair
Spot repair can mean breaking concrete and patching it, or rerouting the line overhead through walls or the attic. Detection time, foundation depth and the reroute choice drive the total. Ask the plumber to price both routes when both are possible, and to say who patches the floor afterward.
Repiping a whole house
A repipe scales with square footage, the number of bathrooms and the number of stories. Drywall access drives the labor. Ask whether the price includes patching and paint, and whether any permit cost is inside it. A written scope room by room makes two quotes comparable.
Garbage disposals: the small job where options still matter
A like-for-like disposal swap sits near the low end because it assumes an outlet and plumbing connections that are already in place. The price rises with motor horsepower, a different sink flange, a new outlet or a change to the piping under the sink.
Ask what each horsepower size would change in daily use, and whether the quote includes hauling away the old unit. A unit that fits the sink and the way you cook serves better than one that is oversized or a poor match.
Six places where two quotes for one job drift apart
Two plumbers can quote the same problem and land far apart without either one padding the bill. The gap usually hides in one of six places.
- Scope: one drain or the whole line, one leak or the section around it.
- Parts: make, model, size and whether anything is reconditioned.
- Access: a cleanout, a crawlspace or a slab changes the labor.
- Permit and inspection: who pulls the permit, if one applies, and whether any city fee is in the price.
- Warranty: parts and labor, in writing.
- Trip charge and arrival window: ask for both before you book.
The City of Greenville asks a master plumber to register with its Permits and Inspections office, so ask about that too. Registration and a permit, where one applies, are part of doing the job properly and belong in the quote.
Five steps to compare two written quotes fairly
A short routine makes the comparison fair. It takes a few minutes per plumber and often shows which quote leaves something out.
- Describe the same problem, in the same words, to every plumber.
- Ask each one to list the scope and the parts in writing.
- Ask for the total as a range or a firm figure, written, before work starts.
- Check the Texas license and the city registration.
- Compare the quotes line by line, not just by the total.
If one quote is much lower than the rest, ask what it leaves out. If one is much higher, ask what it adds, and whether that addition is something you want.
Jobs that need a plumber's look before a price
Some jobs have no range here because the cost depends on what the plumber finds first. These include leak detection on its own, burst pipe repair, sewer line spot repair and water damage drying. They also include water heater repair, faucet and toilet repair and water softener installation. For those, ask for a written estimate after the plumber has seen the problem.
Gas line work is outside what this site covers, so it has no range here.

Cost questions: permits, high quotes and phone prices
Do these ranges include permits and taxes?
Not necessarily. A range is a rough market spread, not a quote. Ask each plumber whether permit fees, sales tax, hauling and any trip charge sit inside the number or get added to it. A quote that does not say is hard to compare with one that does.
Why is my quote above the range?
A quote can land outside a range for sound reasons: a hard-to-reach pipe, a code upgrade, a larger unit or an emergency visit. Ask the plumber to point to the line that explains the gap. If the explanation is thin, a second written quote is worth the time.
Will a plumber give a price over the phone?
For simple jobs, a plumber may offer a range. For anything hidden, such as a leak, a backup or a slab problem, someone has to see it first. A number given blind is a guess. Ask what the visit itself costs and whether it applies to the job.
